Salivary Testing
With salivary testing we can look further into root causes to identify pathogens that can contribute to both oral and systemic diseases. This allows us to provide targeted and customized care plans that consider our patient’s lifestyle, overall goals, and systemic health.
Salivary testing and phase contrast microscopy as part of a risk assessment helps us to understand our patients overall pathogenic burden as well as identify whether there is an increased risk for oral or systemic diseases. We use salivary microbiome testing, salivary pH testing and phase contrast microscopy to help guide us in our treatment recommendations.
What is Phase Contrast Microscopy?
A valuable tool that we can use for diagnostic, treatment planning and educational purposes. The microscope slide allows us to observe a live sample of your plaque biofilm which helps in identifying the presence and activity of bacteria and other microorganisms in your mouth. This allows for more timely and effective interventions because we can see the variety, quantity and motility of the bacteria, fungi, and parasites in your plaque biofilm. We can also use the microscope to monitor the effectiveness of treatments by comparing before and after images of your microbial activity. The quieter the slide and the less movement along with having little to no moderate or high risk pathogens indicates a healthy biofilm which is what we strive for.
